Mexico has understood the benefits of a temazcal ceremony for centuries. This part-sweat lodge, part-sacred ritual has been reported to enhance physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Now, many luxury resorts and hotels across the country offer these ceremonies as part of their spa services.

What is a Temazcal Ceremony?

Participants enter a sweat lodge (typically an igloo-shaped hut made of volcanic stone, wood, or cement). Hot volcanic rocks are placed in the center, and water is poured over them to produce steam. Herbs like sage or copal are added for their cleansing properties.

Ceremonies vary, but they usually last around two hours and may include shaman-led thanksgiving or chanting. At Imanta, the ceremony starts outside the lodge by the fire where the stones are heated. Cynthia explains, “We start around the fire, being thankful for the forest and the earth. When you enter the temazcal, you kneel, kiss the earth, and ask to be on the belly button of the earth, representing rebirth.”

Participants throw tobacco onto the stones while focusing on areas of life they want to improve. This mindfulness session promotes personal freedom and relaxation, often leading to better sleep.

The History of Temazcal Ceremonies

Temazcal rituals have been part of Mexican and South American culture for around 1,000 years. The word “temazcal” comes from the Nahuatl word Temāzcalli, meaning “house of heat.” These rituals, originating from the Pre-Hispanic indigenous people of Mesoamerica, were used before and after battles and sports events, and were believed to have healing powers and aid in childbirth.

What Are the Benefits of a Temazcal?

Physical Benefits

1. Flushes Out Toxins: Sweating helps remove harmful substances from the body, improving overall well-being.
2. Clears Skin: Steam flushes out skin impurities, clears pores, and may help treat acne.
3. Supports Weight Loss: Sweating reduces water weight, which can alleviate bloating.
4. Aids Blood Flow: Heat opens capillaries, improving blood circulation, increasing oxygen levels, and lowering blood pressure.

Mental Benefits

1. Decreases Risk of Dementia and Alzheimer’s: A study in Age and Ageing suggests that sitting in a sweat lodge may reduce the risk of these conditions.
2. Releases Mental Burdens: Temazcal ceremonies involve deep contemplation similar to meditation. Cynthia describes it as “psychological therapy” that promotes mental health, balance, and calmness.
